610 million people are at risk to contract the disease that vaccination campaigns a half century ago had nearly eliminated.

The disease, named after the coloration that comes with it in the form of jaundice is again receiving the attentions of a massive vaccination campaign. 48 million people are scheduled to get the vaccine in the next four years.

A recent reduction in the vaccinations against it have allowed for a resurgence in the disease and it currently kills about 30 000 people a year, almost all of them Africans. Health officials are worried that the recent reductions in vaccination coverage have left millions exposed to the virus and fear an epidemic if vaccinations are not resumed on a large and comprehensive scale.

The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations has donated a 29 million pound grant to the project and hopes to stockpile 11 million doses of the vaccine for administration
