Zostavax is the vaccine made to protect individuals against shingles, and available to senior residents through the Ottawa County Health Department.
Shingles is a very painful skin condition that's often associated with severe blistering. It is often referred to as herpes zoster.
Other symptoms of shingles can include fever, headache, chills and upset stomach. In rare cases, a shingles infection can lead to pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness, brain inflammation or death.
For more information; contact the Ottawa County Health Department from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at (419) 734-6800 or in Ottawa County at (800) 788-8803.
The shingles vaccine will be available for $160 to those 60 years or older. Only one dose of the vaccine is required for protection.
