A vaccine for smallpox has been recently developed from plants by researchers at Thomas Jefferson University.
This highly effective and safe vaccine was made from a non-infectious viral protein, tobacco and collard plants. Such an approach is referred to as "recombinant technology." Trials with mice have been 100 % effective protection from smallpox.
Hilary Koprowski of Thomas Jefferson University states, "I consider our research work finished." Clinical trials must now be done before any drug could be put into general public use.
Results of the research have been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
