Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and its associated Children's Hospital have found a way for the development of a Chlamydia vaccine.
Chlamydia trachomatis is the most prevalent sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the world today. Symptoms of the infection are usually mild or absent, so it can damage a woman's reproductive organs.
Dr. Darville, senior author of the study states, "If we can identify plasmid-deficient derivatives of the C. trachomatis strains that infect humans, they would have the potential to serve as a vaccine against this disease."
The results of this study are available in the September 15th issue of the Journal of Immunology.
