The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved a new vaccine to protect individuals against smallpox that is considered to be used in bioterrorism.
The ACAM2000 vaccine is intended for the inoculation of people at high risk of exposure to smallpox and could be used to protect individuals and populations during a bioterrorist attack.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) considers smallpox that's caused by the variola virus as one of the greatest potential threats to the health of the general public.
The ACAM2000 smallpox vaccine is manufactured by Acambis Incorporated of Cambridge, England and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
