A panel of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently voted the Provenge prostate cancer vaccine to be safe for use.
The panel further believes that there is evidence that the vaccine works in treating advanced prostate cancer that no longer responds to hormone treatment.
The FDA has no requirements to follow the advice of its advisory panels, but it usually does in most cases.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in American men. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 220,000 new cases this year, and about 27,000 deaths.
