Protherics, a British drug company based in Cheshire, claims to have developed and tested a vaccine that will help people control their blood pressure levels. According to the firm, the vaccine has been extensively tested and should be released to the general public within the next half decade.
A hormone known as angiotensin is responsible for narrowing arterial pathways in the body and therefore causing higher blood pressure. The vaccine operates through the use of a protein that serves to help the body's immune system identify and annihilate the angiotensin hormone. This vaccine would need to be administered every six months to a year, according to researchers at Protherics.
High blood pressure, otherwise known as hypertension, is a condition that is estimated to affect around one third of all adults. It is closely linked to substantially increasing the risk of heart disease and is responsible for around 60,000 deaths each year in Britain alone.
