AVANT Immunotherapeutics Inc., a Massachusetts-based biopharmaceutical company, began their Phase 2 testing of the oral typhoid fever vaccine, Ty800, in order to determine the most effective dose of the drug.
Accelovance, of Maryland, is leading the study at five locations in the U.S.
President and CEO of AVANT, Una S. Ryan said, "AVANT is advancing its programs towards creating a 'Super Combination Traveler's Vaccine'. Our 'super vaccine' is designed to capture the potential of our single-dose oral delivery platforms to combine protection against multiple bacterial disease including cholera, typhoid, ETEC and paratyphoid into one convenient and efficient vaccine for world travelers."
Avant reported that it developed the Ty800 vaccine to provide a quick, oral, one-dose vaccine against Salmonella typhi, which causes typhoid fever. The Phase 2 study will attempt to show that Ty800 is easily tolerated by humans as well as being effective against typhoid fever.
The two most common typhoid vaccines used today only provide immunization in about 50-80% of patients who receive it.
