If a mother has been exposed to allergens, it has been hypothesized that the fetus can mount an immune response.

This has become rather controversial. There is an inability to detect antigen-specific T cells in cord blood. A new technique called MHC tetramer can detect these cells.

The Journal of Clinical Investigation in its June 1st issue talked about a team of researches led by Rachel Miller. They are from Columbian University and are doing a study on cord blood B and T cell immunity i.e. responses following maternal vaccination against influenza during pregnancy with a drug called Fluzone.

Pregnant women being vaccinated is considered safe.
