A doctor at the Royal Womens Hospital in Melbourne has recently proposed to test a cervical cancer vaccine in babies, with a view to adding the vaccine to the infant immunization program.
Professor Suzanne Garland is of the opinion that there are benefits to immunizing infants instead of schoolgirls. Professor Garland conducted company-funded trials for Gardasil and the vaccine Cervarix, Garland is on both advisory boards for these two vaccines.
The vaccination of infants can particularly be beneficial for the Third World countries, where many girls do not finish school.
Cervical cancer vaccines have been tested only in children as young as 10 years old at the present time. Professor Garland mentions that there's need to first test its effectiveness and safety in infants.
